Ingredients

  • 1.5 pounds ground beef lean preferred
  • 1/2 cup bread crumbs plain or seasoned
  • 1 large egg beaten
  • 2 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • to taste salt and pepper
  • 8 ounces mozzarella cheese cut into thin strips
  • for decoration googly eyes plastic or candy eyes

Equipment

  • Baking sheet
  • Mixing bowl
  • Cooling rack
  • Small paring knife
  • Toothpick or tweezers for placing eyes

Method

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper for easy clean-up.
  2. Combine the ground beef, bread crumbs, beaten egg, minced garlic, dried oregano, and a pinch of salt and pepper in a large mixing bowl. Mix everything thoroughly until well incorporated, using your hands or a spoon.
  3. Using your hands, shape the mixture into small, uniform meatballs about 1 to 1.5 inches in diameter and place them on the prepared baking sheet.
  4. Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for about 20-25 minutes, until they are browned and cooked through. They should feel firm to the touch and juices run clear.
  5. Once baked, transfer the meatballs to a cooling rack for a few minutes to prevent sogginess on the bottom.
  6. Take a strip of mozzarella and carefully wrap it around each meatball from one side to the other, creating a mummy-like appearance with banded cheese.
  7. Use a small toothpick or tweezers to gently attach googly eyes to the front of each wrapped meatball, just above the cheese wrapping, giving them a spooky face.
  8. Arrange the mummy meatballs on a serving platter and add extra googly eyes or decorations if desired for more fun.
  9. Serve warm, perhaps with a side of tomato sauce or your favorite dipping sauce for added flavor.

Notes

For extra spookiness, use candy eyes or add additional decorative touches like little spider webs or ghosts made from vegetables.
